The UK government has announced a rapid rollout of ‘plug-in’ solar panels that could save money for consumers and businesses alike. The technology is already widely available across Europe, with Germany leading the way. There were believed to be around 780,000 registered plug-in PV systems in the country by the end of 2024, with another 500,000 being added each year.
Also known as ‘plug and play solar panels’ or ‘balcony solar’, the self-contained units can be plugged into the mains supply using a standard three-pin plug. The government is fast-forwarding changes to wiring regulations, meaning that systems under 800W will be able to be plugged safely into domestic sockets without needing an electrician. The panels deliver free power via microinverters, which can be used for domestic electricity usage, offsetting usage from the energy grid and lowering bills. The inverter converts the direct current into alternating current which can then be added to the mains supply. They are designed to be lightweight and easy to install and use. However, not every setup will be suitable, particularly homes and premises with older wiring systems.
Wiring systems should be checked for safety before using ‘plug and play’ solar panels

The rapid rollout of plug-in solar panels is influenced partly by the situation in the Middle East, which has sent energy costs spiralling. It will also run alongside a new discounted energy scheme which the government says aims to ensure that new homes are cheaper to run, with regular solar panels and heat pumps installed as standard.
The discounted energy scheme will benefit businesses and homes in areas affected by ‘curtailment’. This occurs when wind farms are paid to switch off on windy days, due to the system being unable to use all the power generated and is particularly predominant in Scotland and the East of England. Under the trial, businesses and households will receive discounted power ‘so that more of the extra electricity can be used rather than wasted’.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “The Iran War has once again shown our drive for clean power is essential for our energy security so we can escape the grip of fossil fuel markets we don’t control.”
