Many customers may be looking to simplify their security posture by reducing the number of different solutions they deploy as part of their digital defences this year, according to research by Gartner. A survey by the analyst found that 75% of organisations are looking at security vendor consolidation in 2022 – up from 29% in 2020.
► Improving ‘risk posture’ and reducing complexity seen as key benefits rather than cost reduction
► Higher adoption of SASE and XDR expected
Gartner said that management is increasingly dissatisfied with the operational inefficiencies and lack of integration that results from managing multiple vendor solutions. The focus is on reducing complexity and improving risk posture rather than saving budget. Of those surveyed, 65% expect to improve their overall risk posture, while only 29% expect reduced spending on licensing.

The survey found that 57% of organisations are working with fewer than 10 vendors for their security needs, as they are looking to optimise to fewer vendors in key areas like secure access service edge (SASE) and extended detection and response (XDR). Four out of ten (41.5%) plan to adopt SASE by the end of 2022, while more than half (54.5%) expect to have XDR in place.
It also found that XDR is delivering positive results with 57% of organisations resolving security threats faster after implementing solutions. More than half of those surveyed already use SASE to simplify network and security policy management and improve security posture.
In a further insight, Gartner said that while 89% of organizations want SASE and XDR to work together, security and risk management leaders will often opt to keep them distinct but ensure they can interoperate. This approach was validated by 46% of those surveyed.
It also advised IT leaders to plan two years in advance for consolidation and said they should be aware of the potential for M&A disruption due to vendor consolidation. The survey was conducted online during March and April 2022 among 418 respondents from North America, Asia Pacific and EMEA.
