The Ethernet switch market grew 23.9% year-over-year worldwide in the third quarter of 2022, generating revenues of $10.0 billion, according to IDC. Growth in western Europe outpaced that, rising 25.8%. As well as hyperscalers and cloud providers building out capacity, shipments to enterprises and for use in branch officers were just as strong as SMBs and mid-market companies look to increase network capacity to cope with more demanding network traffic.
► Multi-gigabit switch sales grow at almost 80%
► Western European market grew 25.8% year on year
► Enterprises and branch sales driving the market as well as cloud providers
The market showed strength across both the data centre and non-data centre segments, said IDC. The fastest-growing area for the market was for 2.5/5GbE– also known as multi-gigabit switches. These were up 79.1% year-on-year.

Revenues in the non-datacentre / enterprise campus and branch segment grew 25.6% while revenues in the data centre segment rose 21.7%. The higher-speed areas of the market are being driven by hyperscalers and cloud providers building out network capacity. Here, 100GbE revenues increased 19.8% year over year and accounted for 23.8% of total revenues.
Lower-speed switches, which are typically deployed in enterprise campus and branch locations, showed strength too. Revenues for 1GbE switches rose 22.8% year over year in 3Q – these switches generated 34.0% of total market revenues.
