Here at Newsflash Online, we’re always interested in the way that different technologies can be leveraged in a number of different settings. By now, many of us are familiar with fingerprint technology being used to unlock our phones.

In 2019, however, similar tech will be used in cars for the first time. Fingerprints will not only be able to unlock the new Hyundai cars but also start the engine. Profiles can also be associated with fingerprints, allowing the driver to make automatic adjustments such as seat positioning, wing mirror positioning and connectivity settings, with other preferences and settings to be added further down the road.

The first fingerprint-enabled car is coming in 2019

Albert Biermann, the head of the company’s research and development division, said in a statement: ‘In the future, Hyundai Motor plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering wheel position, and many other features which will be tailored to driver’s preferences. This will ultimately offer quality driving experience to each and every Hyundai customer.’

Technology to be applied to 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe
The fingerprint technology will initially be used on Hyundai’s 2019 Santa Fe models, which should be on sale in the first quarter of 2019. The driver will be able to unlock their car by placing their finger on a sensor located on the door handle. They can then start the car using the ignition button, which will also be equipped with a fingerprint scanner.

Hyundai says it has overcome security issues
One of the benefits of using fingerprint scanning is, of course, convenience. There will be no more tearing around the house when you’re late for work and can’t find your keys. Another important consideration is security, however, and Hyundai says that it has addressed concerns regarding the forging or fraudulent use of photographed or paper fingerprints.

The company’s announcement explained: ‘With capacitance recognition, which detects differentials in the electricity level in various parts of the fingertip, the fingerprint technology efficiently prevents forgeries and faked fingerprints. The technology’s chance of misrecognizing another person’s finger print as the driver’s is only 1 in 50,000 making it five times more effective than conventional vehicle keys, including smart keys. Moreover, through real-time learning of fingerprints supported by “dynamic update” system, the fingerprint system can continually improve its success rate.’
