Why AI and sustainability are not mutually exclusive

Contrary to the popular perception, AI and sustainability are not mutually exclusive.

As we have reported on Newsflash, while AI’s energy demands are sky-rocketing, it is also hoped that the technology can also be used to make more efficient use of energy and produce an overall reduction in carbon emissions.

Why AI and sustainability are not mutually exclusive

Leading vendors, such as Lenovo, are working on liquid cooling systems designed to slash the energy needed to keep data centres at the right temperature. According to Lenovo, about 40% of the power consumed by a data centre goes on air conditioning. And as the firm pointed out in a recent blog, if AI can be used to make cars, for example, even a little more energy efficient, the savings made will outweigh the energy used setting up and running the AI system that made that innovation possible.

Projects are already underway that will use excess warmth from data centres to provide domestic heating. A planned data centre in east London will potentially heat almost 13,000 homes. This will reduce the amount of electricity we need to generate from other sources, and we are certain to see many more similar projects.

These and many other aspects of AI are all covered in the awareness phase of our Destination AI programme, which has been designed to provide partners with an end-to-end enablement journey on AI.
