Crime is an ever-pressing issue in our society, and the need to protect our loved ones and property is as relevant as ever before. Therefore, as technology develops, it’s vital that home security systems do so too. Lighthouse has created its first-ever product, which in many ways, is lightyears ahead of any other home security solutions. A security camera with integrated artificial intelligence that has the ability to recognise faces and understand a wide variety of spoken or written commands and questions.
The bright minds behind the product, Hendrik Dahlkamp and Alex Teichman, founded Lighthouse in 2014, and this is the start-up’s first product to launch, entering an already crowded market, it was imperative to stand out from the crowd. When asked what he aimed for the product to achieve, Teichman told Business Insider he wanted to “take a traditional camera and give it the eyes of a self-driving car and […] the natural language understanding of a Google Assistant”.

So what does it actually do?
The most ground-breaking feature of this product is its ability to recognise faces. Through the accompanying Android or iOS smartphone app you can register the faces of individuals who live in your house or visit frequently. If an individual unknown to the app enters the house while none of the known faces are present, the camera will send a notification to your phone, alerting you to the presence of a potential intruder.
In addition to this, the camera can differentiate between animal and human faces – coupled with its natural language processing abilities – it can respond to “did the dog get walked today?” by pulling up all video footage from that day where the dog entered or exited the front door.
The camera can also detect specific gestures and actions such as waving; should an individual wave at the camera, it will send a notification to anyone not currently in the house, and two-way communication can begin.
Does it have the traditional features of a home security system too?
As well as all these fantastic new features, Lighthouse also possesses the qualities of a more ‘standard’ security camera such as night vision, sirens, 1080p HD quality recording capabilities and a cloud-based storage system, so you can access recordings from the previous 30 days.
Standing at 8.5 inches tall and 3.4 inches in diameter it’s an aesthetically pleasing device that isn’t intrusive upon your living space. The product is set to launch on Thursday, March 1 2018, for $300 (approx. £215.51) with an optional additional $10/month to access older footage (up to 30 days).
