Microsoft: SQL Server 2008 is end-of-support

Promoted Published 19th October 2018

Extended support for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 is coming to an end on 9th July 2019. While Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 ends on 14th January 2020.

Are you aware of the upcoming end-of-support for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2? Find out how TD SYNNEX can support your organisation to be ready. Once a product reaches its end of support deadline, security updates will no longer be released for it, leaving systems exposed to outside threats, and the possibility of non-compliancy with industry requirements such as GDPR.

Don’t put your business in jeopardy. You have options – and TD SYNNEX want to help.
Use the end of support transition as an opportunity to evaluate your hybrid cloud options.

On 12th July Microsoft announced that free Extended Security Updates for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will be available in Azure virtual machines; your customers could also move to SQL DB Managed Instance, Microsoft’s fully-managed Database-as-a-Service solution with industry leading SLAs that does not require future upgrades.

Your customers’ options include:

  • Migrate SQL Server workloads from on-premises to Microsoft Azure and get Extended Security Updates until 9th July 2022 – available to any Azure IaaS customer at no additional charge. This means your customers can take the initial steps to the cloud, keeping their workloads protected, while we work together on their upgrade and digital transformation strategy.
  • SQL Server customers can also migrate workloads to Azure SQL Database Managed Instance, a fully-managed database-as-a-service solution. This provides a highly cost-effective and productive option for SQL Server workloads.

Options beyond Azure… To get the best security, innovation and datacentre efficiency we recommend that if your customers stay on-premises they upgrade to the latest version of Windows Server – Windows Server 2016. If you can’t get it all upgraded by the deadline, customers with Software Assurance can purchase Extended Security Updates at 75% of the full licence cost – purchasing only for the servers they need.
