While the majority of ear bud users tend to stick with the silicone tips that are provided with most brands, there are other options to enhance sound quality.

Foam tips expand to fill the ear more completely, helping to filter out noise from outside and improve the sound from the source you are listening to.

The best solution in terms of quality is a personalised tip that is moulded to the unique shape of your own ears like a custom-made ear plug.

This typically involves a trip to an audiologist for an impression to be made and a wait while the plugs are made from the resultant mould.

Now, Ultimate Ears, a brand from Logitech, has introduced a set of ear buds that it says can mould themselves to fit your own individual contours in less than a minute.

These UE Fits make use of what the company calls ‘Lightform technology’ to harden the gel-filled tips inside your ears.

During the fitting process, the user must employ the UE Fits app to connect to the buds themselves, which have a number of special LEDs embedded inside.

When activated, the LEDs cause the gel to harden and the buds stay that way, essentially creating a near-instant custom-made fit.

The fact that they are moulded to the shape of your ear should make them a more comfortable fit, reducing pressure and outside noise while enhancing sound quality.

In a press release announcing the product, Ultimate Ears said: “This personalized fit provides wearable comfort free of pressure, pain or irritation, even after extended use.

“UE Fits also offer superior passive noise isolation as the fitted tips create a natural seal that blocks ambient noise.”

The ear buds will cost $249 (around £190) and will only be available in the US initially.

As well as the novel personalisation feature, they will provide up to eight hours of continuous play through their batteries, boosted to more than 20 hours when you include the charging case.

The app can be used to customise controls for the ear buds, while the buds themselves also come with onboard play/pause controls.

They will be available in a range of colours, and are sweat-proof and water-resistant.

They will support SBC, AAC and aptX Bluetooth codecs.
