The UK government’s renewed Geospatial Strategy is advocating the use of new technologies such as AI, satellite imaging, and real-time data to accelerate innovation and boost location-based services in a wide range of the industries.
► Aims to unlock investment, increased use of data and growth
► Geospatial data to be embedded in more everyday apps
The plans aim to help unlock billions of pounds in economic benefits and drive investment and growth that will see geospatial data by embedding in more applications and services. Sir Bernard Silverman, chair of the Geospatial Commission, which produced the strategy update, said: ‘Location-based insights have proven their enduring value again and again – during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, tracking outbreaks across the country was critical to inform public health decisions. The power of location will continue to underpin solutions to our biggest challenges including climate change, energy security and economic growth.’

The strategy also sets out some specific aims, including an examination of the challenges and opportunities in healthcare and innovative ways in which geospatial information can be used in the public sector. The strategy also outlines plans for universities to include geospatial learning in data science and geography courses.
