Electric cars sales up 45% in Ireland in 2023

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has released its figures for new vehicle registrations statistics for 2023, showing that sales of new electric cars were up 45.4% on the previous year with every prospect of a further acceleration in the year ahead.

A total of 22,789 electric vehicles were registered last year in the country representing an 18.7% share of the total market. In 2022, 15,678 electric car registrations were recorded. At 18.54%, hybrid vehicles accounted for a similar proportion of sales to fully electric cars. ‘Plug-in hybrid’ cars had an 8.28%. share. Combined, these three categories now account for 45.5% of the market.

Total new car registrations for 2023 in Ireland were 121,850 – up 16% on 2022.

Brian Cooke, SIMI director general said that ongoing government support will be key to further growth of electric vehicle sales and also noted that a ‘fit for purpose’ charging infrastructure would be needed to support the market and help Ireland achieve its climate goals.
