The growing preference to deploy key apps in the cloud will drive a huge increase in storage requirements and also make backup of SaaS a critical requirement over the next three years, according to industry analyst, Gartner.

► Growing reliance on SaaS will also boost backup-as-a-service uptake

► Cloud backup set to become critical to 75% of enterprises

The firm says as SaaS-based applications become a preferred choice for new and modernised deployments, the data they generate will be significant. As a result, worldwide end-user SaaS spending is projected to grow 20% to total $247.2 billion in 2024, to nearly $300 billion in 2025.

This in turn will make backups even more important and Gartner predicts that, by 2028, 75% of enterprises will prioritise backup of SaaS applications as a critical requirement, compared to 15% in 2024.

Michael Hoeck, senior director analyst at Gartner, said: ‘As businesses are more dependent on SaaS technologies, it becomes crucial to ensure SaaS data is both protected and recoverable. Given the vulnerability of SaaS data to errors, cyberattacks, and vendor mishaps, robust backup solutions are also indispensable.’

Gartner suggests that organisations focus on:

  • Governance assessment – including data protection and recovery capabilities of SaaS applications.
  • Vendor capabilities – verify the SaaS vendor’s ability to protect and recover data from all possible loss scenarios.
  • Third-party solutions – use third-party SaaS backup solutions to complement the native capabilities of SaaS vendors.
