One of the world’s biggest and most influential consumer tech trade shows has returned to its home in Las Vegas.

Last year’s CES was an entirely virtual affair but, despite health concerns and some high-profile cancellations, CES 2022 officially opened on Wednesday.

CES 2022 brings the best – and weirdest – in consumer electronics

There have already been plenty of previews and announcements and, as ever, the event showcases everything from the prosaic and functional to the weird and wacky.

Chip shortages continue to be a great concern for the industry, for example, so any announcements related to new chip designs will be of interest.

Space travel and tourism has been very prominent over the past 12 months and interest in electric and autonomous vehicles is growing all the time.

Then there are emerging technologies and concepts such as the metaverse with its mix of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

Record-breaking electric vehicles and autonomous mobile homes

Mercedes-Benz made a virtual unveiling of its new luxury all-electric EQXX concept car prior to CES’s official opening.

It’s yet to hit the road, but the company says that computer simulation testing shows that the vehicle has a range of 648 miles per charge.

This is the furthest of any electric vehicle yet seen, beating Lucid’s 520 miles and Tesla’s top range of 402 miles.

Elsewhere, LG is one of the first big names to take to the CES 2022 stage and has unveiled everything from robots to the smallest OLED TV yet seen, with a 42-inch screen.

At the other end of the OLED spectrum, the Korean giant also showed off a flexible screen built into a giant, semi-circular spinning chair, which could be ideal for gaming or movies.

The company also revealed its LG Vision Omnipod concept for an autonomous vehicle-cum-living space complete with configurable interior space and an AI concierge service.

If you’ve ever found yourself cursing while looking for batteries for your remote control, Samsung has an offering that could be of interest.

Its SolarCell Remote is said to be the first piece of practical consumer electronic tech to harvest RF signals from your router to maintain its charge.

There’s sure to be lots more to come from the event, which runs until the weekend.
