HP has released a video highlighting the dangers to customers who don’t use genuine HP cartridges in their printers by showing how hackers can very easily exploit simple vulnerabilities to find their way into networks. It explains how a small chip in a genuine HP print cartridge have a unique, tamper-resistant microchip with smart card technology and security-hardened firmware. These chips are protected against any code modifications, preventing any potential breach.

► Genuine HP cartridges are fully protected

► Third party options can leave networks vulnerable

Chips in third-party devices are reprogrammable and provide a gap that hackers can easily exploit. Using one of these copycat cartridges is tantamount to ‘inserting an unknown USB drive into a PC’ the video claims and can give criminals access to your documents and even to the entire network.
