More than half of adults in the UK are now actively using artificial intelligence tools, according to new research from Ofcom. The latest Adults’ Media Use and Attitudes survey found that 54% of people aged 16 and over used AI tools in 2025, marking a sharp increase compared with 2024, when fewer than a third reported using the technology.

Younger adults lead AI usage

Adoption is highest among younger age groups. Nearly four in five 16‑ to 24‑year‑olds (79%) reported using AI tools, followed closely by 74% of those aged 25 to 34. Uptake was also higher among adults educated to degree level and those in ABC1 households, highlighting how demographic factors continue to influence AI adoption.

How adults are using AI tools

Among those using AI, the technology is already being applied in practical ways. Almost half use AI for work or study, while many also rely on it for finding factual information or exploring new capabilities out of curiosity.

Qualitative insights suggest usage is evolving, with some users moving beyond narrow, task‑specific activities and experimenting with broader applications, including support with job applications. A smaller proportion reported using AI primarily for conversational purposes.

AI reshapes online search behaviour

AI is also becoming a routine part of online search habits. Three quarters of online adults said they read AI‑generated search summaries, with regular engagement particularly common among younger users, where around six in ten 16‑ to 34‑year‑olds read these summaries frequently.

Trust remains a factor in AI‑generated content

Despite rising AI adoption, trust in AI‑generated news remains mixed. Many adults say they are more cautious about content written by AI compared with that produced by humans, even as mainstream media continues to be the primary news source for most.

Confidence in identifying AI‑generated content also varies. While some adults familiar with AI feel confident they can recognise it, others remain unsure as AI‑generated content becomes increasingly sophisticated
